Letter From Birmingham Jail
It’s easy on the Internet to share the quotes and snippets of wisdom that we all associate with Martin Luther King Jr. and that have embedded themselves in the public consciousness. But to really understand how important a thinker he was, and how influential his ideas were to how Americans view public life today, I think it’s much more valuable to read this essay. 16 April 1963 My...

On Refinement
One thing that has always resonated with me in my culinary education was from Harold McGee, in his classic tome “On Food and Cooking,” the great argument-decider in every fine dining kitchen. McGee’s meticulously scientific approach to explaining food is valuable, but “On Food and Cooking” is a work of opinionated passion as well. He begins his chapter on cheese by...

Universe Dented, Grass Underfoot →
It wasn’t long after I had first bought a Mac in 2008 that I began to view John Gruber as an authoritative source for Apple analysis and news. For years now, my default response to any big Apple news has been to wait and see what Gruber says about it. That habit of mine was rewarded today when I read this short piece. It’s tough to wake up, read the news, and discover that one of your...

I’ve got the LP on pre-order, but NPR just put the whole album up on their website. Sleater-Kinney was my favorite band when I was in high school, and Carrie Brownstein is a hero of mine. I love everything she does. This new band of hers is no different, a very exciting new chapter of her career.
